This is the month of Damodara and Vaishnavas regularly recite Sri Sri Damodarastakam to worship Lord Damodara. Damodarastakam is a prayer spoken by Satyavrata Muni in a conversation with Nârada Muni and Saunaka Rsi, and is originally available in Padma Purâna (पद्म पुराण) of Krsna Dvaipâyana Vyâsa.

Kasturitilakam - is a composition that describes Krishna´s beautiful appearance. Kasturi- Tilaka is on His forehead, celestial gem Koustubham hangs on His chest. At the tip of His nose, is a rare pearl. He holds the famous flute in His palm. His wrist is decorated with the wristlet. His whole body shines attractively, smeared with the paste of sandal. He, who is ever glorious and victorious, provides moksha to the Gopikas. He is the charm among all Gopalas.
In this era of rapid global transport as well as poorly planned urbanization and overcrowding in many parts of the world, infections such as influenza, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), Ebola, HIV can get transmitted much faster than ever. I think it is necessary to note that these infections and many others causing human diseases have emerged as human pathogens when virus established in animals switched (jumped) host into humans, with subsequent within-species (human-to-human) transmission, ultimately leading to the analogous nature of epizootic diseases among the humans. About three fourths of emerging infectious diseases are known to have zoonotic origin. Possibility of original animal virus to acquire even higher pathogenicity in humans of course, is a cause of concern. Timely containment of infections at the spot of origin can prove to be an efficient strategy to prevent large scale epidemics and pandemics. Tropical forests with wide range of animal and plant species diversity associated with higher likelihood of greater diversity of viral strains and their contact with humans in their vicinity - is a most likely link of cross-species jump of many such infections. Bushmeat hunters are known to be a perfect "virus interface" due to their close contact with animals, mostly primates. Besides, activities of bushmeat transportation, butchering, sales, purchase and consumption are also other important risk factors. Tribal populations that traditionally survive on bushmeat are another interface for animal viruses. Recently ongoing H1N1 influenza pandemic has underscored need of more stronger surveillance on one more interface of viral hosts to contact the humans- swine and poultry farms.
US National Institute of Health funded Global viral forecasting project aims at building a network of virus-discovery projects by monitoring hunters and wild-game markets in some of the potential locations in Congo, Malaysia, Laos, Madagascar, Paraguay, and China. Undoubtedly, this project is anticipated to be a valuable effort in preventing spread of zoonoses to human populations by timely intervention using global viral forecasting.
However, utilization of similar volume of resources for preventing global bushmeat trade, discouraging use of bushmeat among tribals- can prove even more cost-effective strategy to prevent cross-species transmission of infections. It is surprising that none of the projects so far aims towards completely ending bushmeat hunting.
In addition to the concern about infections, bushmeat industry is estimated to cause loss of more than 579 million animals annually only in the Central Africa. Biomass of mammals in parks has got downsized by 70% since 1967 due to bushmeat "harvesting". Many species are facing extinction. Bushmeat hunting also threatens local livelihood. There are some projects such as Bushmeat crisis task force working on prevention of commercial hunting and towards conservation of wild-life. Scale of their operation appears much weaker in comparison to the intensity of bushmeat hunting.
In this view, policy framework promoting vegetarianism at global scale is likely to have a far greater potential as a global public good for health compared to any one of the GPGH policies of the WHO. Since vegetarianism might not only help in significantly reducing disease burden of many chronic diseases (particularly in the developing nations experiencing health transition and increasing burden of non-communicable diseases) but also helps in effective prevention of cross-species transmission of infections with potential of causing pandemics, conservation of biodiversity, reduction of carbon foot-print and ultimately restoring ecological equilibrium.
This is a popular Sanskrit poetic composition from 8th century AD by Sri Adi Sankaracharya. Excluding some differences of concepts from Vaishnavism, core message of Bhakti movement is well represented in effective and easily understandable manner.

Whether it's a T-bane station or a train station, entrances to hospitals, banks or universities -everywhere tobacco smoke is ubiquitous. People smoke as if they have got a license to pollute the environment. Latest newsletter (Sep 2009) from the European Commission's health and consumers directorate mentions about proposal of implementing strong laws towards creating a smoke-free Europe by 2012. Aim is "full protection" against environmental tobacco smoke. Comprehensive policy package which is proposed by the EC is indeed a brilliant move though it has presented much later after environmental tobacco smoke was known for toxicity and harmful consequences for health. Fortunately, a wave of public support exists now and appears to be a good time for this move.
However, the biggest question -how practicable is that going to be in terms of achievement of its intended goals ?

... one in every five teens smoke, and keeping in mind they would go on for next ten years at least means significant rise in smoking trend

In order to get supply of seal fur, hundreds of baby seals are brutally murdered in herds every day, before tourists arrive on this Namibian beach. After looking to this video footage, I feel like how difficult it is to work effectively for preventing animal cruelty. How come such businesses that depend heavily on animal cruelty continue to thrive ! I think the root cause is lack of adequate sensitivity among us. Universal love and mercy are the fundamental principles to maintain ecological equilibrium and well-being of all living entities on this world. We, the Humans have such an intense exploitative tendencies that most people in this world are unable to apply conscience about such issues. It is not one issue for sure. Our exploitative tendencies and this "urban consumerism" for luxurious life have given rise to wide range of problems, such as climate change, extinction of many animal species, uncontrollable population growth and food and water scarcity, forest eutrophication, issues of human rights, menace of nuclear weapons, environmental pollution - etc. One brief and bold recent article which I read recently, explains the underlying trouble and its handy solution.
Last week I read thisblog post and I feel it necessary to derive meaning from it.
Important question - Is it reasonable to blame entire nation on th basis of irresponsible and immature voices emerging from only a handful of people ?
Will that yield any good solution ?
Most often such issues are merely misunderstandings. I would rather prefer to analyze entire issue in an integrated manner, so that underlying factors can also be understood and suitable suggestions can be recommended based on root causes. Such an approach would help society grow mature to solve any similar problems in future. If you are a Krishna-conscious person, you need to be calm and patient neutral observer before you make any suggestions. It might be that you would ultimately trace out a series of immature actions and reactions.
If you accept what I mentioned above, I have got two important points here to emphasize :
1. Equal human identity and equal treatment is utmost essential for establishing peaceful coexistence of humanity. 2. I do recommend Krishna-consciousness as one of the ideal means to get rid of not only what you refer as "racism”, but also other similar pathologies from human populations.
Here is the discussion.
Humans have a natural tendency to derive meaning of differences about their surrounding environment based on distinct features. Humans on this planet share a capability of biological similarity and interbreeding. However, humans have differences in our external appearance. I strongly believe it to be extremely unethical and morally irrelevant if people sharing a set of similar features of appearance not only start considering others as different from them, but also behave in a discriminatory manner simply because “others” don’t share similar features by appearance. Unfortunately it is widespread issue around the world also known as “kin altruism”. Often different value-systems, religions and languages, even ones’ origin from different geographic location - are seen to complicate issues of discriminatory conduct. To add, certain religious philosophies try to spread a sense of divide among community, rather than spreading a message of universal love. Ultimately it hampers the process of cross-culturalism and sometimes gives rise to crime and conflicts. Therefore, racism is a complex issue, often associated with other factors of divide. In my opinion racism, is no different from speciesism and sexism in terms of its origin. Same also applies to other forms of discrimination such as discrimination on the basis of language or religion. If you consider all these issues being linked together, you may find what measures are necessary to promote mature understanding about these issues in community.
Study of vedic literature nicely explains how these issues are closely linked and shows how practice of Krishna-consciousness can provide an ideal solution to solve not only the racism but also these issues of speciecism and sexism. Practice of Krishna-consciousness strives to view all living organisms with a same respect. Eternal, and omnipresent [sarvam khalv idam brahma- from Chhāndogya Upanishad 3.14.1] ; ayam ātmā brahma- Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 4.4.5] Brahman is an absolute reality[ekam sat]. There are number of other verses that can be cited to single origin- supreme consciousness of life in world.
Here I am citing some interesting verses from Aitareya Upanishad. 3.1.1 What is this that we contemplate as ‘self ’? Which is the self? That by which one sees, or that by which one hears, or that by which scents are smelled; or that by which speech is articulated, or that by which taste and tastelessness are known apart? 3.1.2 That which is this mind and this heart: perception, direction, discernment, consciousness, learning, vision, constancy,thought, consideration, motive, memory, imagination, purpose, life, desire, vitality?All these are only attributed names of consciousness. 3.1.3 This is brahman, comprehending all reality. This is Indra, chief of gods. This is the creator, Lord Prajapati; all the gods; and all these five great elements called ‘earth’, ‘air’,‘ether’, ‘waters’, ‘lights’; and these seeming complexes of minute things,and various seeds of different kinds; and egg-born creatures and those born of womb, and those born of heat and moisture, and those born from sprout; horses, cattle,humans, elephants,and whatever living thing, moving and flying; and that which stays in place. All that is seen, and led, by consciousness; and is established in consciousness. The world is seen, and led, by consciousness.Consciousness is the foundation. सर्वभूतस्थमात्मानं सर्वभूतानि चात्मनि । ईक्षते योगयुक्तात्मा सर्वत्र समदर्शनः ॥६- २९॥
A real yogi observes Me in all beings, and also sees every being in Me. Indeed, the self-realized man sees Me everywhere.
It is also true that we can not expect all those following Krishna-consciousness as perfections in terms of putting these principles into practice. It’s a life-long process of interpreting ideals, learning and putting principles into practice. Some people are quick learners and others take time.
Two days back, the G8 summit ended in L'Aquila of Italy with the international consensus over not allowing average global temperatures rise more than 2 degrees Celsius with baseline temperature point being temperature in 1990 or later. Although lack of absolute definition of baseline castes doubt on effectiveness of this goal. EU members accept the baseline set at 1990. Whereas many others, such as Japan, want 2005 as the starting point.
The developed countries could not convince China and India, top emitters of CO2 on commitment that aims at bringing down developing nations' CO2 emissions by 50% by 2050. Both China and India are among the top CO2 emitters, but they rank much lower in terms of per capita CO2 emissions.
"It is inevitable for developing countries to increase emission in the process of economic development, but they will still make efforts to lower the growth of emission in a certain period," Su Wei, director-general of the Department of Climate Change in China's National Development and Reform Commission said.
Moreover, Russia expressed signs that the 80 per cent carbon reduction for rich countries that it signed up was not in fact viable.
That has exposed the weak point of economic development activities. Simply it has become impossible to see effective measures for climate change mitigation going hand in hand with the goals of economic development.
Sustainable carbonless economy looks far unreachable utopia for near future.
Clearly this is something, that goes beyond my understanding.
In most Vaishnava and Vedic traditions, "Prasāda" is a food offered to the Lord and ultimately it is distributed to devotees as a blessing. Main objective underlying this practice of eating moderate amounts of food - Prasada- a Sattvic - blessed and sentient diet that can lead humans to attain purity of consciousness, spirituality and longevity. Sattvic tendencies include the ethical principles of non-harm and benevolence.
Use of cow milk in preparation of Prasāda in ancient Vedic and Vaishanava cultures was strongly linked with cow's motherly status. Cows were treated like a part of the family.
Whereas in present era of dairy farming industry, cows are merely more than a milk and meat producing creatures, living extremely painful life in "milk factories" with "right" of living up to milk producing age and "duty" to face slaughter in order to provide meat. Cows and also other "milk-producing" animals are purely considered in terms of their milk-producing capacity. Calves born by the cows are taken away from cows for various uses such as selling them for producing veal. Milk which cow produces for own calf would go for sell. Raising non-milk-producing animals- "stock" means lack of efficiency.
In this scenario of modern extremely efficient "milk-producing" practices is not at all in agreement with fundamental vedic concepts of non-harm and benevolence. Therefore, Prasāda which is prepared from use of milk from dairy induistryshould not only be far from being a Sattvic diet by fact and definition, but also appears like a testimonial of being a part of cruel and exploitative treatment of cows and other animals. From scientific aspects, there is a clear evidence that milk, sold today at shelves of shops is not similar to milk 1000-2000 years ago. Since modern dairy farms keep draining milk from a cow approximately 300 days in a year. During times of pregnancy, cows secrete 30 times higher estrogens, which makes milk a potent carcinogen and a kind of Rajsic food.
Even after knowledge about this issue, I have heard several reasons for cow milk being accepted in Prasadam. Such as,
Cow that provides milk for preparing Prasāda, would be fortunate one to get blessings of the Lord.
We don't consume meat and therefore we are not responsible for the slaughter of cows. We have been using cow milk as a part of our tradition and stopping use of milk would not help in preventing slaughter of cows.
It is hard to make any impact by not using cow milk from dairy industry
It looks like trivializing the cruelty on animals and should be in conflict to ethical principles and about justification for having Sattvic food to prepare Prasāda. When I consume milk I feel sometimes like a person having a share in cruel treatment of animals. It also reminds me of a character of Bhishma in Mahabharata. Despite of being in a perfect position to raise voice against stripping of Draupadi in royal court, he did not act. I do understand that Bhishma was able and enough to prevent stripping of Draupadi, whereas Hindus, jains and Vaishnava have far less ability to prevent exploitation of cows and other animals. To be precise, I think use of milk in Prasadam should be minimized.

Above two pictures reveals the sharp contrast between two concepts. Raising few cows at home, offering them status as "holy mother" cow, providing care is one kind of exchange of love, co-existence and positive human-animal relationship. Whereas dairy farming industry primarily treats cows as milk producing machines, and therefore it's no less than exploitation of cows.
How to empathize with the sufferings of animals ?? I am asking myself.

It's the middle of June and temperatures are rising. Greenery is in full swing. Lots of bird-chirping around..However, not something that goes as reinvigorating and cherishing life in environment. Yes, I am talking about radon gas emanating from the soil. June is a month, which marks rise in indoor radon levels, achieving peak by August/September. Because radon is not visible, probably most people tend to underestimate the menace of radon exposure. About 9% of lung cancer mortality and 2% of total cancer-mortality in EU is ascribed to radon exposure. In Sweden, every year 400-500 cases of lung cancer are ascribed to radon exposure. All that has to do is not only with its lung carcinogenicity, but also its presence at varying concentrations in water, food, gas released during shower -all that might have some unknown health implications from mutagenic property of radon.

Last week, I wrote about uranium mining issue. Radon is closely linked with uranium mining. Since mining ores left after mining constitute source of radon gas in surrounding localities. Scientific evidence is not stronger enough. Recently, weaker correlation has been shown to exist between distance from uranium mines to indoor radon gas levels within surrounding localities. Since carcinogenic lung toxicity is cumulative and it depends on duration and intensity of exposures during lifetime, most study methods face difficulties in figuring out direct relationship between uranium mining and community level health impacts. Although it has been know that there is no safe dose for radon exposure. Based on studies, 200 Bq/m³ in a room with normal occupancy has been conventionally used as a reference action level. That does not mean domestic radon level less than this limit is "safe". One recent study(Darby et al, 2005) estimates 16% higher lung cancer risk with every 100 Bq/m³ increase in domestic radon and suggests possible reference level not above 150 Bq/m³. However, national governments around the world have considerable differences in their radon policies and regulations. Within EU, inter-country variations in radon goals exist. Part of variation can be attributed to the fact that radon is unevenly distributed in soil and ambient levels of radon varies according to geography, giving rise to differences in practicality of goals. My opinion is that in scenario where health effects from radon exposure is similar, geographic differences in air concentrations of radon should be dealt with coherent policy standards.
Over and above this national level policy differences, there is some extent of complacency at public level. More problematic life is for those who live in social housing, since they have to rely on housing landlords for any necessary radon remediation measures.
Talking of permissions for uranium mining is a difficult decision while prevention of associated health risks are in requirement of more effective policy and its implementation.
Sweden's latest revival of interest in uranium mining regardless of technological sophistication used, casts doubts on smooth and quick achievability of its radon goals. If uranium mining would start, it would be interesting to see, how far it stays away from causing environmental impacts in Sweden.

Uranium-mining has long been known to be associated with environmental hazard. However, concerns over its health hazards to the miners and surrounding populations has continued to remain underestimated to the larger extent.

Apart from occupational exposure during entire process ranging from mining, milling to enrichment operations poses severe health risks. However, soils used for uranium mining also consititute high risk to human health. Human health risks to the surrounding populations spans from direct human exposure to mining area due to reasons such as recreational activities or exposure of native indigenous populations, exposure to radioactive substances released during mining processes in surrounding environment or other forms of exposures such as use of building material from mining areas, contamination of ground water and soil by active waste. Several epidemiological studies have concluded increased risk of certain diseases such as leukemia, kidney diseases, lung cancer, diabetes, physical deformities, chromosomal aberrations - in surrounding populations. However, exact quantification of human health risks has been considered a difficult task due to uncertainties existing in nature and extent use of past mining and surrounding regions, mechanisms and extent of consequences of ground-water contamination and effects on drinking water and food, concentrations of radioactive contaminants, effects from contamination of livestock feed and fertilizers.
According to latest reports(EURATOM ann. rep., 2007), Russia, Canada, Niger and Australia are the major uranium suppliers to EU. Whereas EU produces 3% of its uranium demand.
Latest rise in international uranium prices appears to have revived commercial appetite in uranium mining. Besides this, nuclear energy has been also seen as an option to alleviate climate change associated risks. However, such opinions downplay the risks associated with use of nuclear energy.
Sweden does not seem to be an exception on this phenomenon. Skaraborg and Billingen in Västragötaland and Östersund, Tåsjö and Kläppibäcken of Jämtland have been selected by commercial interests for new uranium exploration projects. Fortunately, such efforts have been met with massive public protests and protests from local bodies. However, some of the legal battles are still going on. There would be new industry plans in future and would require new legal battles to keep up environmental interest at top. Nej till uranbrytningrepresents a well-coordinated opposition movement to uranium mining in Sweden. We should hope that Sweden's environmental and public health interests would not be compromised in future at any cost.

exakt kvantifiering av folkhälsorisker har ansetts vara en svår uppgift
på grund av osäkerheten som finns i natur och omfattning använda
tidigare gruvdrift och omgivande regioner, mekanismer och omfattningen
av konsekvenserna av marknära vatten och effekter på dricksvatten och
livsmedel, koncentrationer av radioaktiva ämnen, effekter av
föroreningar i djurfoder och gödningsmedel.
Senast stigande internationella priserna på uran verkar ha
återupplivats kommersiella aptit för uranbrytning. Kärnkraft har också
ses som ett alternativ till att lindra klimatförändringen risker. Men
sådana yttranden tona ned riskerna med användning av kärnenergi.
Sverige
verkar inte vara ett undantag för detta fenomen. Skaraborg och Billingen
i Västragötaland och Östersund, Tåsjö och Kläppibäcken i Jämtlands Län
har lockat kommersiella intressen för nya uranbrytning projekt.
Lyckligtvis är sådana insatser har mötts av massiva protester från
allmänheten och protester från lokala myndigheter. Men några av de
juridiska striderna fortfarande pågår. Det skulle bli ny industri
planer i framtiden och skulle kräva en ny rättslig kamp för att hålla
miljön i toppen. Nej till uranbrytning är en väl samordnad
oppositionsrörelsen att uranbrytning i Sverige. Vi får hoppas att Sverige inte skulle äventyra dess miljö-och folkhälsoområdet intressen till varje pris.

Samband mellan kost och växthuseffekten är inte ny information. I 2006, var det redan diskuterats i en artikel (Earth Interactions; 10, pp. 1-17, Mar 2006). Men
regeringarna fortsätter att ignorera detta faktum. Nyligen amerikanska
regeringens planer på att undanta boskapsindustri från växthusgaser
produktion förordningar. Ekonomi är inte allt. De måste acceptera vetenskap också.
Tidigare läste jag om samband mellan kost och växthuseffecten i nyheterna. Men idag läste jag denna artikel. De studerade fem typer av kost:

Förutsatt att liknande kaloriintag av 3774 kcal / dag från vegan diet,
de uppskattade att personen konsumerar vegan diet offentliggöranden 701
kg mindre koldioxid i år jämfört med personer som äter genomsnittlig
amerikansk kost.

som visar att genom att undvika kött, vi kan undvika totala växthusgas (koldioxid, dinitrogenoksid och metan)
belastning motsvarar 1,5 ton koldioxid i år för en person.
En
annan undersökning(Eshel et al, 2009) förklarar att markanvändningen effektivitet är
tre och fem gånger större för frukt och torkade bönor produktion
jämfört med den för produktion av animaliska livsmedel.
Även när regeringar ignorerar betydelsen av att reglera växthusgaser
produktion från boskapindustri, vi borde göra något för att hjälpa klimatet.
Jag hittade den här webbplatsen där Tamiflu säljs på nätet. Det
överraskningar mig att ingen regering har någon kontroll på sådana
oetiska affärer. Ni kan få denna drog som helst i världen. Ni behöver inte visa dem läkarrecept. Är det mindre än en bluff? De har
observerats 40-60% av uppgången i sin verksamhet.
Kanske folk
inte är medvetna om riskerna med konsumtion Tamiflu utan indikation och
utan medicinsk rådgivning. Tamiflu kan ge upphov till delirium och
hallucinationer, och det är inte tillrådligt att ta det utan medicinsk
rådgivning. Slumpmässig användningen av denna värdefulla antivirala
läkemedel kan öka risken för resistenta influensa.
Begreppet ses idag ofta förenklat som synonymt med ett styrelseskick med allmänna och fria val av representanter för folket.
Vart tog demokratin har sitt ursprung ?
Antikens Grekland ? Det var där slavar och kvinnor inte hade någon representation.
Idag läste jag en intressant uppsats skriven av professor Steve Muhlberger från Nipissing University, Kanada.
Han diskuterar antikens indiska demokratiska erfarenheter i sin artikel. Jag gillade hans djärva åsikter baserade på fakta från litteraturen bevis och presenterar kontrasterande yttrande från några andra historiker.
Även om jag tror att mycket av bevisning inte spåras nu. Det gör uppgiften att granska demokratin i det antika Indien i enlighet med moderna demokratiska värden svårt.
